Jusuf began his professional basketball from the Croatian team Cedevita Zagreb, where he played from 2012 to 2014.

On 26 June 2014, the Chicago Bulls selected him with the 16th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. Later, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets on draft night. Meanwhile, he made his NBA debut in an 89–79 win over the Detroit Pistons on 29 October 2014.

After playing for three seasons with the Nuggets, Nurkic was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers on 13 February 2017. Two days later, he made his debut for the Trail Blazers, coming off the bench in a 111–88 loss to the Utah Jazz. On 25 March 2019, he suffered an injury with a compound fracture of his left tibia and fibula. After recovering from injury, he made his return in a 140–135 overtime win against the Memphis Grizzlies on 31 July 2020.

Jusuf represents the Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team internationally. He was named MVP of the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship Division B held in 2012. Moreover, he made his senior debut with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team during Eurobasket 2017 qualification.
