Jemele Juanita Hill was born on 21 December 1975 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. She was raised by a single mother Denise Dennard as her father Jerel Brickerson was a heroin addict. Jerel was a bartender at Joe Louis Arena’s Olympia Club, who started taking heroin at the age of 19.

Hill moved to Houston with her mother when she was five years old and moved back to Detroit, where her mother struggled with prescription drug abuse and undiagnosed PTSD. Afterward, she started living with her grandmother in Southfield to get away from her mother. Both her parents have been sober now.

The 5-foof-5-inch attended Mumford High School, graduating in 1993. She then earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the Michigan State University in 1997.

Jemele began her career as a general assignment sports writer for the regional daily newspaper, Raleigh News & Observer in 1997. After working for a year, she moved to the Detroit Free Press, where she covered Michigan State football and basketball until 2005. She served as a sports columnist for the Orlando Sentinel from 2005 to 2006.

In 2006, Hill joined ESPN as a national columnist on ESPN.com. There, she appeared on ESPN programs such as ESPN First Take, Outside the Lines, and The Sports Reporters.  She became an evening anchor of SportsCenter (later named SC6 with Michael and Jemele) alongside Michael Smith in February 2017. Jemele and Ian tied the wedding knot on 10 November 2019, a year after their engagement. The wedding ceremony was held at the Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, California, their first dating spot.
