Terry played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes for four seasons until 2018. He was a part of Ohio State teams that won a national championship over No. 2 Oregon in 2014.

The Washington Redskins drafted McLaurin in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He made his NFL debut in the opening game of the 2019 season against the Philadelphia Eagles on 8 September 2019. There, he made five catches for 125 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown. He finished his first season with an impressive stats of 58 receptions for 919 yards and seven touchdowns, and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
