Jacob Paul Tapper was born on 12 March 1969 to parents in New York City. He is the son of Dr. Theodore S. Tapper and Helen Anne Tapper. His father graduated from Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School and served as the president of South Philadelphia Pediatrics and associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College.

Similarly, his mother worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He grew up with his brother Aaron J. Hahn Tapper in Queen Village, Philadelphia. Tapper with a height of 5 feet 11 inches (1.82 meters) attended Akiba Hebrew Academy in Merion, Pennsylvania. He then went to Dartmouth College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude with a B.A. in History at the age of 22.

The 50-year-old is currently married to Jennifer Marie Brown for more than a decade. The couple exchanged the wedding vows on 3rd September 2006 at a ceremony held in Kansas City, Missouri. Jake and Jennifer first men in 2004 while he was working for ABC News during the 2004 election. They dated for almost two years and later got married.

Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She worked as a regional field manager for Planned Parenthood in Washington, D.C. The couple is the parents of two children; a 12-year-old daughter named Alice and a 10-year-old son named Jack. His daughter Alice published a picture book “Raise Your Hand” in March of 2019.
