Her father, Robert, a professor of Psychiatry and Bio-behavioral Sciences at UCLA had adopted six other children with his wife from various regions like Tonga, China, the Philippines, and other states across the United States. As of that, Lori grew up with brothers, David Jeremy and Robert Scott Coombs, and sisters, Kathryn, Holly Ann, Karen, and Krista.

As of her educational details, Loni attended high school in Los Angeles. Following that, she graduated from Brigham Young University with a major in psychology and a minor in music at the young age of 19. Eventually, she went on to study at Pepperdine Law School and graduated as a Doctor of Law (Juris Doctor) in 1988.

Loni Coombs began her career working as a criminal prosecutor for the Los Angeles District Attorney in 1987. During her run, she looked at all the cases ranging from petty crimes to serious ones like gang theft and murder. Eventually, she was made the deputy in charge of overseeing the district attorney’s Malibu office in 2001. Following that, she tried several celebrity cases for the likes of Nicole Richie and Nick Nolte.

It was later in 2006 when Loni decided to put an end to her prosecution career and start doing freelance television work. Since, she has served as a legal analyst for CNN, The View, KTLA, Entertainment Tonight, and many other media networks. Moreover, she has acted in the 2013 television series, HLN After Dark.

The 55-year-old has been married twice in her life. Her first matrimony was with David Maddux. She and David walked down the aisle together on 28 December 1982. Eventually, the pair welcomed a son together who was named Trevor Maddux. However, their bond didn’t go for long as the married couple parted ways with a divorce some years later.

After that, Loni got married to her husband named Steve Carlston. The two shared the wedding vows on 3 September 2005. Through her second marriage, Loni became stepmother to her two stepsons and two stepdaughters.
