His father graduated from Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School and served as the president of South Philadelphia Pediatrics and associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College.

Similarly, his mother worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He grew up with his brother Aaron J. Hahn Tapper in Queen Village, Philadelphia.
