Schmelzel was born Sarah Hawley Schmelzel to parents Dennis Schmelzel and Amy Schmelzel on 12 May 1994. Her parents raised her in Phoenix, Arizona, United States.

As a junior, Schmelzel won the Mesa City Junior Championhip and the Yuma City Junior Championship. She was highly ranked in both the National Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings and the Golfweek junior rankings.
Likewise, she a standout as an amateur at the University of South Carolina. She was named a Golfweek All-American and even received an All-America Honorable Mention in 2016.
Sarah turned professional after her graduation in 2017 and joined the 2017 Symetra Tour. She secured third place at the inaugural LPGA Q-Series in 2018 and earned Priority List Category 14 status for the 2019 season.
In 2021, she had a T6 finish at the LOTTE Championship and the LPGA Drive On Championship. A year later, she secured her career-best third place at the LPGA Drive On Championship. Moreover, she finished to the top of the leaderboard by firing a first-round 68 at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in 2024.
