Barnes was born to Donald Barnes and Donna Barnes on 22 October 1987. His birthplace is Kalamazoo, Michigan and he spent his early life in Marion, Indiana, United States.
The athlete’s mother held a job in the educational sector. She serves as a business office specialist at Marion Community Schools. He has two brothers named Nick Barnes and Brett Barnes. His early golf memory was playing nine holes with his family after his father got off work.
Erik graduated from Marion High School in 2006. He then earned a degree in Business Administration from Austin Peay State University, graduating in 2010. He regards Tiger Woods, Lee Trevino, and Ben Hogan as his favorite golfers. Barnes says that he would be a club professional if he was not playing golf.

As an amateur, Barnes has won the 2007 ASU Indian Classic and the 2008 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate tournament. Collegiately, he played at Austin Peay State University and was named Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Freshmen of the Year in 2007. He was named the Player of the Year in 2009.
In 2011, he turned professional after graduating from college. He played on the mini-tours such as the NGA Hooters Tour, PGA Tour Canada, and PGA Tour Latinoamérica until 2014.
After 11 years of his professional career, he earned a PGA Tour card in 2022. Furthermore, he made his PGA Tour debut at the Vivint Houston Open. As of now, he has played in 28 PGA Tour events and has been a runner-up once.
