Travis was born on 15 July 1979 near Echuca, Victoria, Australia. He is the youngest of three sons of Chris Fimmel and Jennie Fimmel. His father was a dairy farmer and his mother was a nurse, who served as a recreation officer for the disabled.

Fimmel was raised with his two elder brothers on a 5500-acre farm located between Melbourne and Sydney. He spent his childhood milking the cows on the farm, catching the school bus, spending his weekends fishing, and riding his trail bike on his parents’ land. He was accepted at RMIT University to study commercial architecture and engineering but he left to pursue an acting career.

Earlier, Travis worked as a model after signing with agency LA Models in 2002. He modeled for the underwear, jeans, and fragrance of an American fashion company Calvin Klein.
