His dad played for the NBA teams Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, and Indiana Pacers. After his retirement, he served as an assistant coach for Detroit Pistons from 2014 to 2018.

He played for the Michigan Wolverines for three seasons; from 2010 to 2013. He stands at a height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 meters) and has a bodyweight of 205 lbs (93 kg).

His NBA Career; New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks

Tim was selected with the 24th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He played for the Knicks for two seasons. On 25 June 2015, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the draft rights to Jerian Grant.

The Hawks assigned him to the Canton Charge, the D-League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Later, he was assigned this time to the Austin Spurs, the affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs. After playing for two seasons for the Hawks, he returned to the New York Knicks in July 2017. He played for the Knicks until the 2018-19 seasons.  On 31 January 2019, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks along with Trey Burke, Courtney Lee, and Kristaps Porziņģis.
