Kamarudeen Usman hails from Auchi, Nigeria, who was born on 11 May 1987. He is one of the four children of Nigerian parents Muhammed Nasiru Usman and Afishetu Usman. His father was a Nigerian Army and also worked as a pharmacist in Nigeria. He has two brothers Kashetu Usman and Mohammed Usman and a younger sister named Ashlynn Usman. Kamaru and his family immigrated to the United States when he was eight years old.

All his siblings were involved in sports activities. His brother Kashetu played soccer at the University of South Carolina Aiken and another brother Mohammed played football for the University of Arizona. Meanwhile, his sister played volleyball at Tarleton State University.

Usman attended Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas, where he started wrestling. He wrestled in Iowa at William Penn University for one year and then transferred to the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK).

Kamaru made his MMA debut at the age of 25 in November 2012. He then competed for several regional promotions before moving to The Ultimate Fighter in February 2015. In his debut fight in The Ultimate Fighter 21, he faced Michael Graves, winning the fight via majority decision.

Moving to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, he won the first fight against Leon Edwards on 19 December 2015 at UFC on Fox 17. On 2nd March 2019, he faced UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley in the co-main event at UFC 235. Usman became the new UFC Welterweight Champion after winning the fight via unanimous decision. He made his first title defense, facing Colby Covington at UFC 245 on 14 December 2019. He won the fight via fifth-round technical knockout and also earned the Fight of the Night award.
