Josh Doctson landed a place in the NFL after Washington Redskins picked him in the first round (22nd overall), of the 2016 NFL Draft. However, he sat out of the preseason following an Achilles injury. Josh recorded his first career reception in the season opener in a 16-38 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, he again aggravated his Achilles injury and remained out of the side until 21 October 2016.

During the third week of the 2017 season, Josh landed his first career touchdown on a 52-yard reception. He scored a final touchdown and won the game for the Redskins with a final score of 17-14 in the Thanksgiving game over the New York Giants.

Josh was declined the fifth-year contract option by the Redskins on 1 May 2019. Later on 31 August, he was released by the team. Two days later, on 2 September 2019, Josh penned a year-long deal with the Minnesota Vikings.
