Dwayne Haskins Jr. was born on 3^rd May 1997 to parents Dwayne Haskins Sr. and Tamara Haskins. He grew up with sister Tamia in Highland Park, New Jersey, and later moved to Potomac, Maryland with his family.

Haskins attended Bullis School, where he played football from 2013 to 2016. He was committed to play college football for the University of Maryland over Rutgers University to play college football, but he later decided to attend Ohio State. There, he majored in journalism. In his first 2016 season at Ohio State, Dwayne had stats of completing 40 of 57 passes for 565 yards and four touchdowns. In the 2018 Big Ten Football Championship Game he threw for 499 yards and five touchdowns. Similarly, he threw three touchdowns in the 2019 Rose Bowl and won the MVP award.

Haskins forwent his remaining two years of college football and entered the 2019 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the first round, 15th overall by the Washington Redskins. He officially joined the Redskins in May 2019.
