Hayden Randle Hurst was born on 24 August 1993 to parents Jerry Hurst and Cathy Hurst. He grew up with his sister Kylie in Jacksonville, Florida.

Hurst pursued his high school education at The Bolles School. Afterward, he went to South Carolina and began to play college football. He stands at a height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 meters) and weighs 245 lbs (111 kg).

Hayden played college football at South Carolina fro three seasons, from 2015 to 2017.  At his last season, he had the stats of catching 44 passes for 559 yards and two touchdowns. Later, he was declared for the 2018 NFL Draft in December 2017.

Hurst was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round (25th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. His first career touchdown reception was a 26-yard pass from fellow rookie Lamar Jackson in the fourth quarter of a 36–21 loss to the Carolina Panthers in October 2018.
