Christian Jackson McCaffrey was born on 7 June 1996 to parents Ed McCaffrey and Lisa McCaffrey. He grew up with his family in Castle Rock, Colorado. He has three brothers; Max, Dylan and Luke McCaffrey who are also a football player.

McCaffrey was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the first round with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He made his NFL season debut in the season-opener against the San Francisco 49ers. There he recorded 47 rushing yards, 38 receiving yards, and a lost fumble in a 23–3 victory. He held the Carolina Panthers franchise record for most receptions by any player in a single season in 2018.
