Austin started his college football career in 2013 and played until 2016. He had 1,495 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns in his senior year. He signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2017 NFL Draft.

Ekeler had two receptions for 18 yards in his NFL debut against the Denver Broncos. In week 14 game in 2018 season, he suffered a neck injury, which sidelined him for two games.
