Before his MLB career, Yoenis played for the Alazanes de Granma in the Cuban National Series for eight seasons until 2010. After being defected from Cuba in 2011, he intended to join the MLB.

On 13 February 2012, he signed a contract with the Oakland Athletics of MLB. He played for the Athletics for three seasons and was traded to the Boston Red Sox on 31 July 2014. Later, the Red Sox traded him along with Alex Wilson and Gabe Speier to the Detroit Tigers for Rick Porcello on 11 December 2014.

The 5-foot-10-inch played for the Tigers for a season and was traded to the New York Mets on 31 July 2015. Following his 5-year tenure with Mets, he is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2020 season.
