Ira Jeffrey Glass was born on 3 March 1959 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. He is the middle child of Jewish parents Barry Glass and Shirley Glass. Her father is a businessman and a founder of GlassJacobson Financial Group. Meanwhile, his mother Shirley (1936-2003) was a psychologist, who was known as “the godmother of infidelity research.”

The 6-foot-2-inch Glass grew up with an older sister, Randi Glass Murray, and a younger sister named Karen Glass. He attended Milford Mill High School in Baltimore County. There, he was involved in editorial roles as a member of the school’s yearbook and a co-editor of the student literary magazine.

After graduating from high school in 1977, he went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Later, he was transferred to Brown University, where he graduated with an honors degree in semiotics in 1982.

Ira started working in public radio at the age of 19 in 1978. He did his intern at National Public Radio’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Even after graduation, he continued working in NPR on various positions such as tape-cutter, desk assistant, newscast writer, editor, producer, reporter, and substitute host. Moreover, he contributed to NPR programs, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Talk of the Nation.

In 1989, he moved to Chicago began to work as a reporter for NPR’s Chicago bureau. Later, in 1995, the MacArthur Foundation offered him to produce and host a radio show that would focus on Chicago-area writers and performers. He then Friday-night program named The Wild Room on WBEZ Chicago Public Radio. The program became an instant hit and the following year, he started hosting This American Life. His podcast has won numerous awards including Peabody Awards in 2007, 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2016. The program now broadcast on numerous public radio stations in the United States and internationally, and is also available as a free weekly podcast.
