Sara Hilary Haines was born on 18 September 1977 as a daughter of Dick Haines and Sandy Haines. Her family consists of three siblings; two older sisters and a brother with whom she grew up in Newton, Iowa.

Haines with a height of ‎5 feet 6 inches (1.68 meters) attended Smith College in Northhampton, Massachusetts. There, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Government at the age of 23 in 2000.

Initially, Sara worked as a Production Coordinator on NBC Universal for seven years, joining in 2002. Later, she became a contributing correspondent for NBC’s Today Show.  She was part of the fourth hour the show alongside Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, from 2009 to 2013.

Haines then joined the ABC News in 2013 as a correspondent.  She worked as an anchor for the weekend editions of Good Morning America. In 2016, she joined The View as a permanent co-host. Haines now appears as a co-anchor of the third hour of Good Morning America alongside Michael Strahan.

Sara, aged 41 is currently married to Lawyer Max Shifrin. The couple exchanged their wedding vows on 22 November 2014 in The Bahamas. Max currently serves as an associate for the Baker & Hostetler LLP, a law firm based in Cleveland, Ohio.

The couple welcomed their first child; a son Alec Richard Shifrin on 5 March 2016. Later, they welcomed a daughter, Sandra Grace Shifrin on 23 December 2017. They are soon-to-be the parents of three children. In January 2019, Sara announced on the GMA that she is expecting a son from her husband.
