Likewise, her mother, Jerrie, was an artist, who served as the Art Director of the Morehead Planetarium at UNC-Chapel Hill. Michelle has a sister named Eve Charlesworth and a brother named James Charlesworth.
Michelle attended Princeton High School in Princeton, New Jersey. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy from Duke University in 1992. Eventually, she studied economics at the University of Freiburg on a full scholarship from the German government.

Michelle began her journalism career from a WMGM radio network in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She then moved to the ABC-affiliated WCTI-TV in New Bern, North Carolina. After that, She worked at WNCN Channel 17 in Raleigh as a reporter and anchor for two years.
In 1998, she joined ABC7, also known as WABC-TV, and started working with the Eyewitness News team. She has covered various award-winning reports including her personal battle with facial skin cancer. She now co-anchors Eyewitness News Saturday and Sunday Morning.

Her husband, Steve, is a producer of the consumer reports program, 7 On Your Side at WABC-TV. He has been contributing to the ABC network since 1997.
Since their blissful bond, the couple co-parents two wonderful children together. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Isabelle Marlene on 16 October 2006. Later, their second child, a son named Jack James came to this world on 29 September 2009.
