Lara Christine Von Seelen was born on 19 June 1969 to parents Richard von Seelen and Carolyn von Seelen. Her father served in New York as the president of the North American division of the knitwear manufacturer, Pringle of Scotland.

Spencer with a height of 5 feet 9¾ inches, attended Garden City High School in New York. Later, she went to Pennsylvania State University and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.
