Mako was born on 14 January 1991 to parents Fe’ao Vunipola and Iesinga Vunipola. His father Fe’ao is a former international rugby union player who participated in the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cup.

Moreover, his mother Iesinga is the Methodist minister and chaplain to the UK Tongan community. He is the eldest of two children of his parents and has a brother named Billy Vunipola.

Billy, age 29, is a professional rugby union player and his Saracens and England teammate. He is the nephew of former international players, Manu and ‘Elisi Vunipola.

Mako spent much of his childhood with his brother in Wales.
