Just after his birth, his family moved to Michigan, then later Birmingham, Alabama, and finally to Orlando, Florida. John attended Glenridge Middle School and Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando. Later, he went to Indian Springs School outside of Birmingham, Alabama, graduating in 1995. He graduated from Kenyon College with a double major in English and Religious studies in 2000. After graduation, he worked as a student chaplain at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio for five months.

John began his career as a publishing assistant and production editor for Booklist in Chicago. During that time, he began writing his first book, Looking for Alaska, which was published on 3 March 2005. The book won the annual Michael L. Printz Award by the American Library Association in 2006 and appeared on ALA’s annual list, “Top 10 Best Books for Young Adults.”

Likewise, he released fourth solo novel, The Fault in Our Stars in 2012, which debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list. His other bestselling books and novels include Paper Towns (2008), The John Green ESampler (2011), and Turtles All the Way Down (2017). The movie based on his novel Paper Towns was released on July 24, 2015. Moreover, he has co-authored several books such as Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances (2008), Will Grayson, Will Grayson (2010), What You Wish For: A Book for Darfur (2011), and Indy Writes Books: A Book Lover’s Anthology (2014).
