Birtles pursued her primary education at Cradle Hill Community Primary School in Seaford, England. She then attended Brighton Girls, formerly Brighton and Hove High School. After graduating from high school, she won a scholarship to read English Literature at Christ’s College, Cambridge.

Birtles presented “The Insider” documentary on debt for Channel 4 in 2007. Moreover, she co-presented numerous programs such as BBC 1’s “Homes Under the Hammer”, ITV Scotland’s “Spend Spend Spend” as well as “First Time Buyers” and “Doctor Dosh” for UKTV Style. Moreover, she has authored 38 books including one best-seller. Some of her books are A Woman’s Little Instruction Book (1995), A Little Book of More Abuse (2002), and The Money Magpie (2009). Currently, she is a regular financial expert on Daybreak, BBC Breakfast News, This Morning, BBC News, and Sky News.
