Emily Steel was born in 1984 in Salt Lake City that makes her 36 years of age and her birthday falls on 2nd April every year. She is the middle child of Richard B. Steel and Catherine De Mott Steel. Her father worked as a scientific analyst for Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical company. Similarly, her mother is a retired speech pathologist, who worked at the Norwich Public Schools in Norwich, Connecticut.

When she was a child, her family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, and East Lyme, Connecticut. There, she grew with brothers, Irving Steel and Ryan Steel. Later, in 2006 she graduated from the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media with a degree in journalism and mass communication and an interest in investigative and business reporting.

Steel joined The Wall Street Journal in 2006 and began covering business developments and industry trends on the digital advertising and media beat. Moreover, she contributed to its award-winning “What They Know” series about pervasive practice of tracking Americans online, including investigation about privacy breach at social-networking site Facebook.

From 2012 to 2014, she worked as a media and marketing correspondent for Financial Times. In 2014, she joined The New York Times, where she now serves as a business reporter, covering the media industry. She has uncovered a series of settlements totaling $45 million related to sexual harassment allegations against Bill O’Reilly, the former Fox News host, and numerous sexual harassment allegations.

The 36-year old is currently married to her longtime love Daniel Jerome Hoevel. The duo exchanged the wedding vows on 28 July 2018 at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut.

The duo first met in December 2014 at Hot Bird bar in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. At that time she was at a farewell party and he was getting a beer with a friend. Later they started dating and got engaged.

Daniel, aged 33 serves as a vice president for capital raising and investor relations in the Manhattan office of a technology investment firm, Silver Lake. He graduated cum laude from Kalamazoo College with a bachelor degree in Economics in 2009.
