Hamish is professionally known as the artistic director of the Belgrade Theatre who previously had the same designation at the Dundee Repertory Theatre.

Ian, who stands tall at a height of 6 feet and 1 inch (1.85 m), received the first part of his education from the Edinburgh Academy, an independent school for boys. Subsequently, he joined the University of Aberdeen only to later train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
