The actress was born as Caroline Sidney Aaron on 7 August 1952 in Richmond, Virginia. Her family is from Hungary and Lebanon. Her mom, Nina Abady (née Friedman), was a civil rights activist, and her father’s name is Abraham Aaron Abady. Besides them, she also had an elder sister, Josephine Abady, a theatre director and producer, who died from breast cancer on 25 May 2002, aged 52.

Josephine was a prominent artistic director of the Cleveland Playhouse (1988-1994) and Circle in the Square Theater (1994-1996). Caroline went to American University in Washington, D.C., to study performing arts.
