Ana Kristina Gasteyer was born on 4 May 1967 to parents Phil Gasteyer and Mariana Roumell-Gasteyer. Her father is the former mayor of Corrales, New Mexico and her mother is an artist. She grew up with her family in Washington, D.C.

Gasteyer with a height of 5 feet 5.5 inches (1.66 meters) attended Sidwell Friends High School. Afterward, she went to the Northwestern University School of Communication and earned her graduation from there.
