Akiem Jamar Hicks was born on 16 November 1989 to parents Frank Hicks and Desiree Hicks in San Jose, California. He grew up with two sisters in Elk Grove, California.

Hicks attended Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks. He then went to Sacramento City College to begin his college football. He stands at a height of 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 meters) and weighs 352 lbs (160 kg).

Hicks was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played for the Saints for four seasons and then was traded to the New England Patriots. After playing for a season, he joined the Chicago Bears on 13 March 2016. He was even named to the 2019 Pro Bowl roster following his performance in the 2018 season.
