The player comes from a working-class family as his father works in the construction industry and his mother is a registered nurse. He is accompanied by a brother named Jack Walton who was also his training partner in his early years. Jack now works as a sales representative at Hydraulic Steels Australia Pty Ltd.

Walton with a height of 6 feet began playing tennis at the age of five. He won the New Zealand ITF Summer Championships and the Oceania Closed Junior Championships in 2016. He achieved a career-best ITF World Junior Ranking of no. 60 on 2 January 2017.
Moreover, he played college tennis at the University of Tennessee from 2017 to 2022. As a senior, he won the NCAA doubles title with partner Pat Harper in 2021.
