The player was born as James Frederick van Riemsdyk on 4 May 1989 in Middletown, New Jersey, to parents, Frans van Riemsdyk and Allison. Besides his parents, he has two siblings as younger brothers, Trevor and Brendan. Trevor was born on 24 July 1991 in Middletown; New Jersey played for Carolina Hurricanes from 2017-2019.

He stands at the height of 6 feet 3 inches (191 cm) tall and weighs around 98 kg.

During the 2007 NHL draft, he was picked by the Flyers. Two years later, he went to Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey then Ann Arbor, Michigan when he played for the USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program (NTDP).

During the end of the 2011 season, he and Flyers agreed upon a six years contract worth $25.5 million. A year later, he went to another NHL team, Toronto Maple Leafs, on 23 June 2012. During the 2012-2013 season, out of 48 regular games, the player scored 18 goals and made 32 points. One of his accomplished stats is making an NHL record for the fastest goal scoring four seconds into the frame on 28 March 2014.

When James was a free agent on 1 July 2018, he returned to Flyers. Both the parties agreed upon a five years contract worth $35 million.
