Chris was born to parents Morten Gotterup and Kate Gotterup on 20 July 1999. His parents raised him in Little Silver, New Jersey.
Morten is also a professional golfer who plays at Rumson Country Club. He has won the 2012 New Jersey Pre-Senior Championship, the 2020 New Jersey Four-Ball Championship, and the 2022 New Jersey Senior Amateur Championship. Likewise, his mother Kate is a 1994 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Gotterup has two younger siblings; a sister named Anna Gotterup and a brother named Patrick Gotterup. Anna is also an athlete who plays lacrosse at the United States Naval Academy.
After graduating from Christian Brothers Academy in 2017, he enrolled at Rutgers University. There, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media Studies with a minor in Sports Management in 2021.

Gotterup had a decorated amateur career, winning the Met Amateur Championship in 2019. In the same year, he was named the MGA & NJSGA Amateur Player of the Year.
Collegiately, he played at Rutgers University before transferring to the University of Oklahoma. At Oklahoma, he won the East Lake Cup and Puerto Rico Classic and finished as a runner-up at the Big 12 Championship.
Chris turned professional in 2022 and began to play in the Korn Ferry Tour. He finished 23rd in the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour season-long standings which earned him a PGA Tour card for the 2024 season. His first PGA Tour win was at the Myrtle Beach Classic in May 2024.
