Riley was born James Davis Riley to American parents on 17 December 1996. His father is David Riley and his mother is Kim Riley.
The golfer was raised by his parents in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. His parents have been playing an influential role since the beginning of his career. The youngest of two children in the family, he is accompanied by a sister named Caroline Riley.
Davis pursued his high school education at Presbyterian Christian School, graduating in 2015. He then graduated with a business degree from the University of Alabama.

While in high school, Davis won the Mississippi state title for four straight years. He made the final of the U.S. Junior Amateur two years in a row; in 2013 and 2014.
Likewise, he received the Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award and was named All-USA Boys Golf Player of the Year by USA Today in 2015. Collegiately, he played at the University of Alabama where he was ranked as the best collegiate player in the country. He was the 2018 Palmer Cup team member and 2018 All-America Third Team selection.
Riley earned his first PGA Tour card after finishing ninth on the combined 2020-21 Korn Ferry Tour season on the points list. He captured his first PGA Tour title, winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with partner Nick Hardy in August 2023.
