Steven’s half-sister, Valerie Adams, is a dual Olympic gold medallist and four-time world champion shot-putter. On the other hand, both his brothers, Warren and Sid Jr., had careers in the New Zealand National Basketball League. Sadly, Sid passed away back in 2006 due to stomach cancer. It was his brother Warren who rescued him from the streets of Rotorua and brought him to Wellington. One of his other brothers’ name is Ralph Adams.

Post his graduation from Scots College in late 2011, he chose Notre Dame Preparatory School. He got the fortune to acclimate himself to American basketball before enrolling at Pittsburgh in June 2012. During his lone season at Pittsburgh, he became the recipient of the Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year and earned Big East All-Rookie Team honours. In the 2012-2013 season, he played 32 games making an average 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

His professional career began while playing for NBA team Wellington Saints of the National Basketball League from 2011. However, he was unpaid to keep his college eligibility. Two years later, he got the fortune to play for Oklahoma City Thunder after getting a prime selection as the 12th overall pick on 27 June 2013.
