Samuel Richard Darnold was born on 5 June 1997 to parents Michael Darnold and Chris Darnold. He grew up in Capistrano Beach, California with older sister Franki Darnold, a college volleyball player at the University of Rhode Island.

Darnold pursued his high school education at San Clemente High School in San Clemente, California. Afterward, he got a scholarship from the University of Southern California to play college football. He stands at a height of 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 meters) and his listed weight is 225 lbs (102 kg).
