Kyle Howard Long was born on 5 December 1988 as the second son of Howie Long and Diane Addonizio in Ivy, Virginia. His father is the Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end. He has two siblings; an elder brother named Chris Long and a younger brother Howard Long, Jr.

Long pursued his early education at St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Virginia. He then went to Florida State University to play college football. He stands at a towering height of 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 meters) and 332 lbs (151 kg).

Kyle also played college football for the Saddleback College, and the University of Oregon. Afterward, the Chicago Bears selected him with the 20th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Long made the 2013 season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals at right guard. That made him the first rookie in team history to start a season opener at the position in the Super Bowl era. He earned a spot in the 2014 Pro Bowl due to the injury of the original Pro Bowl left guard Mike Iupati on 20 January 2014.

After the 2014 season, he made the Pro Bowl again and was also named as a second-team All-Pro guard. He was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl after the 2015 season. However, because of the multiple injuries, he announced his retirement on 6 January 2020.
