Serena Altschul is an American journalist, who earned recognition from her work on MTV News and CBS. She was the creator, producer, and host of an MTV renowned documentary series called Breaking it Down.

Serena von Reis Altschul was born on 13 October 1970 in New York, the United States to a rich family. Her father Arthur Altschul was an art collector, investment banker, and philanthropist, who served as a director at General American Investors Company, Inc. in New York. Similarly, her mother Siri von Reis is a botanist, author, and poet, who worked as an investigator at the New York Botanical Garden. Her parents married in 1963 and divorced in 1972. Later, her father remarried the Southern Charm matriarch, Patricia Altschul.

Serena has a brother named Arthur Altschul, Jr. and a sister named Emily Helen Altschul. Meanwhile, she has two half-brothers; Stephen Altschul and Charles Altschul, and a step-brother, Whitney Sudler-Smith. Stephen is a mathematician who has designed algorithms that are used in the field of bioinformatics.

Altschul grew up with four older siblings at Fifth Avenue in New York City. She attended Millbrook School in Upstate New York and graduated in 1989. Afterward, she moved to Claremont, California, and went to Scripps College to study English literature. While in college, she produced The Last Party, a documentary on the 1992 presidential election. However, she dropped out of college in 1994.

Earlier, Serena worked as an anchor/reporter at Channel One News for two years. In 1996, she joined the MTV News and started working on Choose or Lose election coverage for the 1996 campaign. Moreover, she covered a wide range of hard news and popular culture stories including MTV News: Unfiltered and True Life.

From 1999 to 2002, she hosted an hour-long documentary series, Breaking it Down, focusing on issues such as gang violence, homeless teenagers, and the effects of the drug trade. She also served as a New York-based correspondent for CNN from 2002 to 2003.

In December 2003, Altschul joined CBS News and was named a contributing correspondent on the network. From 2013, she began appearing as a contributor for CBS Sunday Morning.
