In the movie, If Beale Street Could Talk, Regina King narrated the role of a mother helping her pregnant young daughter fight the justice system and get her innocent boyfriend out of prison. Her prodigious performance made her win first ever Academy Award in 2019.

American actress Regina King obtained the Oscar in the category of Best Supporting Actress at the 91st Academy Awards for her performance in the 2018 romantic drama movie If Beale Street Could Talk. She portrayed the character of Sharon Rivers, who is a fierce advocate for her daughter, Tish in the movie, adapted from James Baldwin’s 1974 novel of the same name.

The 48-year-old got a bit emotional while collecting the prestigious award and paid tribute to Baldwin’s writing adopted by director Barry Jenkins.

Regina was in battle along with fellow nominees Emma Stone (The Favourite), Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), and Marina de Tavira (Roma) for the award.

Regina King Bio: Early Life, Parents, Education

Born as Regina Rene King in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1971, she celebrates her birthday on 15th January every year. She is the eldest daughter of parents; an electrician father Thomas King, and special education teacher mother, Gloria (Cain).

Regina grew up in View Park-Windsor Hills along with her younger sister Reina and went to Westchester High School. Later, she earned her graduation from the University of Southern California.

Regina first gained attention as Brenda Jenkins in the NBC television series 227 in 1985.

She was in a lead role on ABC’s drama series American Crime from which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series in 2015 and 2016.

Her third Primetime Emmy Award was from 2018 crime drama web television series, Seven Seconds, where she narrated the role of Latrice Butler. Regina was married to Canadian actor Ian Alexander Sr. on 23rd April 1997. Ian was a vice-president of the now-defunct Warner Bros.

However, their relationship endured only for 10 years, which ended through the divorce in 2007. She and her ex-husband share a son named Ian Alexander Jr., born on 21st January 1996.
