Leonie was born to parents Martin Kung and Angelika Kung on 21 October 2000. She spent her early life in a remote area on a farm in Beringen, the Häglilo.
The athlete’s parents are in the veterinary profession and even ran a horse breeding business. An eldest in the family she has a sister named Lisa Kung.
Kung’s parents have played a leading role in her career development. She went to the United States with her family and received training at the IMG Academy in Florida. Her mother is also her manager and her sister Lisa is also a tennis player who plays at Utah State University.
