It was on 4 December 2017 when Ryan sustained a severe back injury after a head-on tackle during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The deadly hit left Ryan unable to move his legs and was immediately rushed to the hospital. The doctor reports revealed that he sustained a spinal contusion.

Later on December 7, Ryan went through a spinal stabilization surgery. However, the severe injury left him out of the 2018 season. On 30 November 2018, he was seen jogging for the first time since his surgery and as of now, the athlete is meeting massive improvement in his health.
