As football is in the genes of Clay’s family, his younger brother, Casey Matthews played as a linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles. Besides, his other family members include brothers, Kyle Matthews and Brian Matthews, and sister, Jennifer Matthews.

Standing at a tall height of 6 feet and 3 inches (1.91 m), Clay attended Agoura High School which ringed the start of his amateur football career.

Following his successful time at the University of Southern California, Clay entered the NFL field picked 26th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He recorded his first career touchdown during a Monday Night Football game on 5 October 2009 against the Minnesota Vikings.
