Brent early career started after NHL team, Minnesota Wild picked him in the first round, 20th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Additionally, he also played the 2003/04 season for Ontario Hockey League (OHL) team, Brampton Battalion.

His NFL debut with Wild came against Chicago Blackhawks on 8 October 2003. In 2005/-06 season, one of his impressive stats was securing 16 points in 72 games.

Subsequently, in the next season, he penned a four-year contract worth millions on 25 October 2007. In the same year, his stats were a career-high 15 goals and 43 points. After spending almost seven years at Wild, he went to San Jose Sharks in 2011.
