The player was raised by his parents Jose Luis Velo and Maureen McCarrol in Danville, California. His father Jose has worked as the Deputy Chief of Administration at the San Francisco Fire Department.
Velo has Spanish roots on his father’s side as his dad is from Madrid, Spain. He is accompanied by a sister named Marina Velo who serves as the Director of Operations and Business Development at Fenix Fotography, LLC.

Velo was named the 2015 East Bay Athletic League MVP and the 2015 All-East Bay Athletic League team at high school. He also won the LasPo Open in 2016.
From 2015 to 2019, he played collegiate golf at San Jose State University. There, he won the San Jose City Championship twice in 2017 and 2018. He also placed second at the 2019 Bandon Dunes Championship and the 2017 Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
Furthermore, he won Ken Venturi Most Valuable Player for San José State all four years and became the only player to win the award all four years in SJSU history.
Kevin turned professional in 2020 and began to compete in PGA TOUR Latinoamerica. He placed No. 4 in the season-long Totalplay Cup which earned him the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour status. Moreover, he earned his PGA Tour card for the first time for the 2025 season after his ninth-place finish in the Korn Ferry Tour Points List.
