Joe’s father Tony works as a pitching instructor at batting cages owned by former major league Jason Giambi. He signed with the Montreal Expos organization in 1974 and pitched in three games for the Gulf Coast League Expos.

However, the Texas Rangers selected Gallo in the first round, with the 39th overall selection, in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. He then signed with the Rangers and began his professional career with the Arizona League Rangers.
Gallo played some years in the minor league with the teams Spokane Indians, Hickory Crawdads, Myrtle Beach Pelicans, and Frisco RoughRiders.
In 2015, he got promoted to the major league and made his MLB debut against the Chicago White Sox on 2nd June 2015. There, he hit his first major league home run and drove in 4 runs (becoming the first Ranger to achieve four RBIs in an MLB debut game).
After seven seasons with the Rangers, multiple sources state that Joey was traded to the New York Yankees on 28 July 2021.
