Jimmie Kenneth Johnson was born on 17 September 1975 in El Cajon, California. He is the son of Gary Ernest Johnson and Catherine Ellen Dunnill. His father used to drive a truck for B.F. Goodrich and his mother Cathy drove a school bus for extra money.

Johnson has two younger brothers; Jarit & Jessie Johnson. He pursued his high school education from Granite Hills High School in his hometown.

Jimmie started to compete in motorsports at the age of four and eventually won his first championship in motorcycle racing when he was eight years old. He and began stock car racing with his team, Herzog Motorsports in 1998. In 2000, he moved to the NASCAR Busch Series (now Xfinity Series).

Afterward, Johnson moved to Hendrick Motorsports in the Winston Cup Series in 2002. He finished fifth in the points in his first full season, was second in 2003 and 2004, and fifth in 2005.
