Johnson has two younger brothers; Jarit & Jessie Johnson. He pursued his high school education from Granite Hills High School in his hometown.

Jimmie started to compete in motorsports at the age of four and eventually won his first championship in motorcycle racing when he was eight years old. He and began stock car racing with his team, Herzog Motorsports in 1998. In 2000, he moved to the NASCAR Busch Series (now Xfinity Series).

Afterward, Johnson moved to Hendrick Motorsports in the Winston Cup Series in 2002. He finished fifth in the points in his first full season, was second in 2003 and 2004, and fifth in 2005. He won his first Cup Series championship in 2006 and won until 2010, being the first and only driver in NASCAR history to win five consecutive championships.
