Meanwhile, her mother, Gwen, served as a City Councilwoman as the District 8 representative. She shared a sibling bond with her brother named Alton W. Yates II.

About 5 feet and 3 inches (1.6 meters) tall in height, Toni attended Bishop Kenny High School in her hometown for her early education. Later on, she went to Florida State University and graduated with a major in Communications.

Toni commenced her media career as a reporter at CBS-affiliated WTOC in Savannah, Georgia. She then moved to  WSAV-TV and worked as a weekend co-anchor. Similarly, she was a reporter for NBC-affiliated WTLV and was a weekend co-anchor for WJXT in Jacksonville, Florida.

Furthermore, she also appeared at the morning news in Norfolk Virginia, and held the position as a Communications Director for the March Of Dimes. She then took a job of a General Assignment reporter at another NBC-affiliated WGAL in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She was a weekend anchor-medical reporter at WPHL-TV and later worked as a weekday anchor before leaving the network. In 2005, Toni joined the WABC’s Eyewitness News team, where she works as a New Jersey reporter.
