Gwen first met Tim while teaching at Western Nebraska. Since Tim was also an educator at that time, the pair established a summer trip to China for their students and traveled to the Asian country nearly every summer through 2003.

After walking down the aisle together, Gwen and her husband welcomed two children into their lives. They have a daughter named Hope Walz and a son named Gus Walz.

Hope is now 23 years of age born on 10 January 2001. Likewise, Gus is the youngest of two who celebrated his 17^th birthday on 14 October 2023.

Gwen and Tim lived in Mankato, Minnesota for nearly 20 years before moving to Saint Paul.
