The athlete was born as Emerson Christian Hancock on 31 May 1999 in Cairo, Georgia. His biggest strength and support to pursue a career in a baseball field is his parents, Don Hancock and Mona Hancock.

The 21-year-old is the sixth overall pick at the 2020 MLB Draft. To be associated with the giant MLB club is the biggest dream for Emerson to pursue a professional career. After the draft over, the Marines shared the exciting news of the club’s association with Emerson.

Before Marines, Emerson in his high school senior years went 11–1 with 0.75 earned run average (ERA) and 125 strikeouts over 65 innings. He then got drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 38th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. However, he chose to commit to playing college baseball at the University of Georgia instead of Diamondbacks.

During his freshman season in 2018, he appeared in 15 games. A year later, he made 8–3 in 14 starts including an impressive 1.99 ERA and 97 strikeouts in ​90 1⁄3 innings.
