Edwin commenced his MLB career after Texas Rangers traded him to the Cincinnati Reds on 15 June 2001, some months after they initially selected him in the ninth round of the 2000 MLB Draft. He recorded his MLB debut on 24 June 2005.

Edwin had a considerable 2006 season with the Reds as he batted .276 with 15 home runs and 72 RBIs from 117 games. He was later traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009. A year later on 16 December 2010, Edwin penned a one-year contract worth $2.5 Million with the Blue Jays with the club option of $3.5 Million in 2012.

The talented baseball player registered his 200th career home run on 8 May 2014 playing for the Blue Jays. He later switched to the Cleveland Indians on 5 January 2017, following a three-year deal worth $60 Million. The deal included a club option for 2020 season worth an additional $25 Million, with a $5 Million buyout clause. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners on 13 December 2018 prior to his yet another trade to the New York Yankees on 15 June 2019.
