American journalist Diane Sawyer is a prominent face on television, who has been serving as an anchor on ABC News. She is known for hosting ABC World News Tonight, the flagship daily evening television news program on the network.

Lila Diane Sawyer was born on 22 December 1945 to parents Erbon Powers “Tom” Sawyer and Jean W. Sawyer. Her father was a county judge who served as Kentucky’s Jefferson County Judge/Executive. Similarly, her mother was an elementary school teacher.

Soon after her birth in Glasgow, Kentucky, her family moved to Louisville, where she grew up with sister Linda Sawyer. Standing at the height of 5 feet 8.5 inches (1.74 meters), Sawyer attended Seneca High School. Afterward, she went to Wellesley College, from where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the age of 22.

Initially, Diane was a weather forecaster for WLKY-TV in Louisville and later became a general-assignment reporter. Later, she left the job and became an assistant to Jerry Warren, the White House deputy press secretary. There, she was involved in drafting President Richard Nixon‘s public statements. Eventually, Sawyer became a staff assistant for U.S. President Richard Nixon until 1978.

Soon after, Diane joined CBS News and a general-assignment reporter. Later, she became political correspondent and first female correspondent on 60 Minutes, an investigative-television newsmagazine. In 1989, she joined ABC News and co-anchored programs such as Primetime Live and 20/20 for several years.

Sawyer co-anchored Good Morning America from 1999 to 2009. As of 2019, she serves as a special contributor for ABC News.

Diane, aged 73 married Mike Nichols on 29 April 1988. Mike was an American director, producer, actor, and comedian. Before Diane, he had been married three times and all of them ended in a divorce. Well, he had three children from his previous relationship.

Nevertheless, their married life tragically ended after her husband’s death. Mike died of a heart attack on November 2014 in Manhattan. Despite the long-tenured married life, they did not have any children from their relationship.

Before her marriage, Sawyer was in romantically linked with Frank Gannon, an aide to President Richard Nixon, and American diplomat Richard Holbrooke.
